DeWitt County Commissioners had a full agenda for its May 11 meeting, including a review of fraudulent activity on a county bank account.

County Treasurer Carol Martin addressed the County Court, seeking to authorize changes after the discovery of fraud on the county payroll account, according to The Cuero Record. The account the fraudulent charges had been made on, amounting to $3,463, would have to be closed.

The fraud was external. The DeWitt County Sheriffs Office has located one suspect and is still looking for the second.

In public hearings, the court approved a 45-mile-per-hour speed limit on Matthew-Adams Road in Precinct 2. The court will hold another hearing about whether or not to establish a four-way stop there.

Also approved were 35-mile-per-hour speed limits on Primitive Baptist Church Road, Benbow Road and Edgar Leesville Road.

Following public hearings, the court moved on to approve contributing funds for right-of-way acquisition and utility adjustments along State Highway 72.

Preliminary real property appraised values in DeWitt County amounted to $1.158 billion. With losses and exceptions, the net taxable value is $1,146 billion. Oil and gas mineral value appraisals are estimated at $5.265 billion, though for budget purposes, the appraisal district will account for nearly half of that.
