Victoria College issued the following announcement on July 7
Victoria East High School student Sadie Duran wanted to keep her academic momentum going, so she decided to spend much of her summers taking dual-credit classes at Victoria College.
“I didn’t want to get into that summer slump,” Duran said. “I first took dual-credit classes at VC during the summer, then I decided to start taking them during the regular semesters.”
Duran wound up accumulating 26 credit hours of college work at VC while compiling a 108.39 grade average at East and being named the high school’s 2020 class valedictorian.
“I really think the dual-credit classes at VC helped prepare me to take my academics to the next level,” said Duran, who will attend The University of Texas at Austin in the fall. “The dual-credit classes taught me responsibility. It’s not like high school. You don’t have a teacher always getting on you to do well. You have to take responsibility for your own actions and classes.”
Duran always excelled in academics, but was shocked to learn she was ranked atop her class during her freshman year in high school.
“I never asked my counselors where I ranked, but my friends were telling me they were pretty sure I was No. 1,” Duran said. “I finally emailed a counselor and found out I was at the top of my class.”
Duran managed to juggle dual-credit classes and her regular high school classes while also competing on the East tennis team, being active in school clubs and volunteer organizations, and working part time.
“My high school counselors really worked with me to make sure I would get back to the high school campus on time for classes,” Duran said. “I pretty much had a set schedule. I would go to practice after school, do my homework when I didn’t have classes, and then go to work.”
Duran, who plans on double-majoring in mathematics and computer science at UT, said she has no reservations about walking on to a major university campus after getting a taste of college at VC.
“Dual-credit classes prepare you for what you’re going to see after high school,” Duran said. “During my four years at UT, I really hope to take what I learned at VC, like time management, into my college experience.”
Victoria College is offering over 155 sections of dual-credit courses during the upcoming fall semester. Registration is now underway.
“Dual-credit classes provide high school students first-hand experience to college-level work, and is a perfect option for students who wish to lighten their course load and ease their transition to college,” said Sabrina Romo, Victoria College’s director of pre-college programs and recruitment. “Students can enhance their study and time management skills, and can be paired with an academic coach who will serve as their mentor during their time at VC.”
