Possible Calendar Adjustments
As you may have seen, many area districts have made adjustments to their school calendars after receiving new guidance from the Texas Education Agency and local health authorities.
This week, I met with the FISD Reopening Advisory Committee and discussed pushing back the first day of school one week to Monday, August 24.
Delaying the students’ start by one week will give the district additional time to establish safety protocols and train staff on the new procedures required to keep themselves and their students healthy and safe. It will also allow FISD time to develop a staggered transition for students as they return to campuses for face-to-face learning. This plan will limit the number of students arriving on the same day, not knowing the new safety procedures. Campus staff will be able to teach smaller groups of students the new safety procedures so that each returning group will have the procedures modeled when they arrive on campus.
On Thursday, July 23, 2020, Wilson County Superintendents will meet with local health authorities to hear their recommendations regarding in-person school. This information and the feedback regarding the delaying of school one week will guide the FISD Board of Trustees’ decision regarding the first day of school for students. Parents will be notified on Friday, July 24.
Once again, thank you for your patience as we work through the many changes and challenges this school year presents. It has not been easy, and I expect that things will continue to challenge us to find new and innovative ways to provide every child a quality public education. As we move through these complex challenges, FISD remains committed to preparing your child for a prosperous life.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sherri Bays
Superintendent
