Gonzales County County: Hispanic students were most represented ethnicity in 2021-22 school year

Of the many ethnicities represented in Gonzales County County schools, Hispanic was the most prevalent ethnicity among Gonzales County County students in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 4,020 students attending Gonzales County County schools, 71% were Hispanic. White students were the second largest ethnicity, making up 22.2% of Gonzales County County students.

In the previous school year, Hispanic students still were the most common group in Gonzales County County, representing 71.2% of the student body.

Gonzales North Avenue had the most even distribution of races among the county schools, including 65.9% Hispanic students, 23.8% white students, 9.4% Black students, 0.5% Multi-racial students, and 0.4% Asian students.

In the 2021-22 school year, the total number of students enrolled in public schools in the county increased 0.3% when compared to the previous year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

“The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students…dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools…gun violence, and mental health issues,” claimed the Texas Almanac.
